Community
At Cobram Secondary College, we believe schools should be deeply connected to the communities they serve. As a rural public school, we are proud to play an active role in the life of Cobram and surrounding communities — not only educating young people, but helping shape the community of tomorrow.
Our students regularly engage with local organisations, volunteers, businesses, service groups and community members through leadership, volunteering, commemorative events, wellbeing initiatives and service learning opportunities. These experiences help students develop empathy, responsibility, leadership and a strong sense of belonging.
One of the most significant examples of this connection is our annual ANZAC Day Ceremony. Since 2021, the ceremony has grown into a major community event involving local schools, families of fallen soldiers, veterans, the Australian Defence Force, emergency services, community groups and volunteers. The event is led by our students and provides authentic opportunities for young people to learn about service, sacrifice and community leadership.
Our students are also actively involved in volunteering and community partnerships. Through programs such as Active Volunteering and the Athlete Development Program, students work alongside organisations including local CFA brigades, community groups and local primary schools, developing leadership skills while making meaningful contributions to the wider community.
Student leadership at Cobram Secondary College extends well beyond the classroom. Students volunteer at local preschools, support community events, assist with local initiatives and represent the school with pride across the region.
We are proud of the way our students and staff engage with aged care facilities, local media, service organisations, sporting clubs, cultural groups and community events. Whether performing through our music program, supporting local fundraising efforts, participating in commemorative services or volunteering their time, our students learn that education is not just about academic success — it is about contribution.
Importantly, our staff are also deeply involved in community life. Across Cobram, Barooga, Tocumwal, Berrigan, Numurkah and Shepparton, our staff volunteer countless hours supporting local sporting clubs, community organisations, theatre groups, emergency services, fundraising initiatives and leadership programs.
Our staff serve as committee members, coaches, volunteers and mentors across organisations including Holstein Australia, Women of the Murray, APEX, Lions Club, CFA, Neighbourhood Watch, community cinemas, local theatre companies and sporting clubs. They coach cricket, football and netball teams, support junior sport, choreograph local theatre productions, volunteer at Park Run events and contribute to community fundraising initiatives such as the World’s Greatest Shave and the Firefighter Stair Climb.
Many of our staff are actively involved in the arts and cultural life of the region through groups such as the Shepparton Band, Numurkah Singers Theatre Group and the Berrigan Theatre Group. Others support local schools through Parents & Citizens committees, contribute to commemorative committees, or lead community-based leadership and wellbeing initiatives.
This strong connection between school and community matters. Our students see adults modelling leadership, service and contribution every day. They learn that being part of a community means stepping forward, helping others and giving back.
At Cobram Secondary College, community involvement is not an “extra” — it is part of who we are. Our students learn that leadership means giving back, citizenship means participation, and strong communities are built when people care for one another. Our students and staff work alongside the community, celebrate with the community and contribute to the community.
This is what creating the community of tomorrow looks like.
