- At Cobram Secondary College, all students participate in an independent reading program for 25 minutes at the start of the day, four days per week. This class is called Illuminate.
- During Illuminate classes, a range of reading and comprehension skills are explicitly taught in a series of mini lessons. Students are provided with opportunities to practice these skills through reading books of their own choosing.
- Teachers engage in regular conferencing sessions with students to monitor their application of the skills and their understanding of the text.
- The teacher and each student set goals which they celebrate and review through regular discussions in Illuminate classes.
